Monochromatic Twist: Fun This Day

Monochromatic doesn’t have to mean monotonous! This layout proves that staying within one colour family – in this case, peaceful blue-greens – can create stunning visual impact through varied shades, textures, and patterns.

For this Scrapbooking Global Blog Hop blog hop, Sharon Dalton – Creative Design Team Member, challenge us to create a Monochromatic layout & it was no surprised when I went through my stash that I had a LOT of blue-green tones that I could use.

If you have arrived here from Julia Quinn – Handmade by Julia Quinn (Australia) then you are in the right place. If you landed here by accident, no problem, please check out all the others who played along by following the link at the end of this post.

The secret to monochromatic scrapbooking? Let texture and pattern do the talking while colour provides the unifying whisper.

For this Scrapbooking Blog Hop challenge, I focused on the blue-green colour family, using the soon to be released Peaceful Gardens Designer Series Paper and sticker sheet as my base. I layered in die cuts and stickers from the Make a Memory Scrapbooking Kit, then built up dimension with Two-Tone cardstock.

By layering different elements from the Designer Series Paper, sticker sheets, and Make a Memory kit, I was able to create depth and interest while maintaining that cohesive, calming feel.

The key to successful monochromatic design is varying your tones – from the soft sage greens to deeper teals – and incorporating different textures and patterns within your chosen colour family.

  • Mix patterns – floral, solid, and textured papers & blended stencil heart background to keep the eye moving.
  • Play with tone – from deep pine green to pale aqua, each shade adds contrast. Two-Tone Cardstock is your friend when you want to add more tones.
  • Layer embellishments – the bicycle, arrow, and flowers give this layout both movement and focus.

The result is a page that’s harmonious yet visually interesting — and a beautiful way to showcase a treasured family photo.

Monochromatic layouts are such a fun challenge — they push you to play with texture, pattern, and tone instead of relying on multiple colours. I’d love to hear your thoughts – would you create a Monochromatic scrapbook layout? Let me know in the comments!

I hope you enjoyed my take on the Sketch for this Global Blog Hop.
