May the 4th be with you! To celebrate Star Wars Day, I decided to raid my stash and see if I could construct the ultimate “fully operational” battle station using only my paper crafting supplies. It turns out, with a little ink blending and some industrial textures, you can create a galaxy far, far away right on your craft desk.

Engineering the Death Star
The focal point of this card is the iconic spherical station. To get that paneled, metallic look:
- The Foundation: I die-cut a circle into Smoky Slate cardstock, cut it in half, and used the cross-hatch die from the Nature’s Symphony set to create the “mechanical” surface detail.
- Adding Dimension: I blended Gray Granite ink over the half circles to give them a weathered look before layering them onto a Basic Gray circle base.
- The Superlaser: To create the famous “concave dish,” I used a smaller gear die-cut from silver and black cardstock to represent the laser’s origin point.
Texturing the Galaxy
A Star Wars card needs plenty of grit and “space” texture. I leaned heavily on the Gears & Texture stamp set to build up the background:
- Silver Embossing: I heat-embossed the industrial lines in silver onto Basic Gray cardstock to mimic the ship’s exterior.
- Ink Blending: To create depth, I blended Gray Granite and Basic Gray inks over the edges to make the center pop.
- Specialty Accents: I added the “dottage” stamp in Gray Granite and finished the bottom with clear embossing powder over Versamark for a subtle, raised texture. The top section features Bright White embossing for a high-contrast, “starlit” effect.
The Finishing Touches
No Death Star is complete without a few more mechanical parts. I die-cut various gears from Black, Gray Granite, and Silver Foil cardstock to frame the scene.
For the final details, I added:
- White Puffy Stars and black matte dots to fill the “void” of space.
- The Sentiment: Using a new white gel pen on Black cardstock, I hand-wrote the iconic “May the 4th be with you” to give it a personal, custom touch.
I love how this project proves that you don’t always need a specific “themed” set to create a themed card—sometimes the gears and textures already in your collection are exactly what you need to build a masterpiece!
